The Board has come into being following a long restructure process, at a difficult time post February’s earthquake, having to cope with the difficulties of obtaining support, both financially and physically to enable the courts to be patched, upgraded and the lights to be recalibrated after having suffered damage in both September and February. While we understand that community facilities are not high on the priority list for rebuilding/fixing, the Board felt it was extremely important that netball be up and running and providing opportunities for our players in our new ‘norm’ as soon as was practicable and has worked hard to achieve this. The new Board is committed to delivering quality netball opportunities at Christchurch for the future and as such always welcomes any ideas, recommendations , suggestions, and other comments which will assist for this to happen. Board members are Mureen Turfrey, Rowena Clancy, Robyn Daly, Lynlea Willian and myself (see bio notes elsewhere on the website). There are many years of experience, wisdom, expertise and passion around the board table, and these people are working hard to move into the governance role from a management/operations perspective. Premier competition continued to be held indoors, this year at both Pioneer and Villa Maria College on Tuesday and Thursday nights – this is at the request of our premier players and coaches and we believe that by being closer to the city, that supporters would tempted to go and support our top teams on these evenings - and this they did to observe some great games with brilliant skills and abilities on show. Netball in Christchurch has been held at South Hagley Park for 90 years !! It is an amazing feat that a sport has had the same home for such a long time. This achievement will be celebrated at the Volunteers function at the end of the year - just wait until Christchurch Netball turns 100 !!! Future Ferns and the associated Whistlers programme commenced for the season with over 100 teams and large numbers of budding umpires working under the watchful eye of their coaches and supporters. Nettabury this year as a trial was held at 2 venues - Action Indoor Sports at Hornby and as is usual at Hagley Park. It is great to see so many youngsters and their parents/carers partaking in this activity each Sunday morning. This will revert to Hagley Park with 2 modules in 2012.
Well we got to the end of the year ............with one damp day which didnt curtail netball activities, one Tuesday night game was postponed due to snow and other than that we were on track with all our games and activities - no mean feat in trying times. Thanks to all those who were involved and gave so much support, positive feedback and willingly assisted when and where asked - if it wasn't for club administrators, coaches and supporters the players would not enjoy a quality product - our game - netball.
