Kia Toa rebounded from last week's heavy defeat to Lincoln University to win the match of the round against the previously unbeaten UC Netball by four goals 51-47.
Kia Toa was missing Chelsea Corbett and Rosie Stewart this week and started with Tessa Boagni in goal. She became the focal point and dominant shooter on court. Kia Toa got an early three goal lead, but this was reduced to one by half time. In the so-called premiership third quarter, Kia Toa skipped away to a 9 goal lead outscoring UC 18-10 for the quarter. While Kia Toa took that momentum into the final quarter scoring five goals to UC's one to lead by 13 at one point UC were dominant for the remainder of the game, but could only close to within four, giving Kia Toa a memorable win. Boagni was the standout and at the other end Soala Sa was instrumental at goal keeper.
Kereru A surprised Lincoln University winning by 11 goals in a high-scoring game, 61-50. Kereru lead at every quarter and while Lincoln won the final quarter 17-12, the 16 goal lead Kereru had established by three quarter time was too great to overcome. Kereru's Liv Clark had another strong game at shooter while at the other end Tactix shooter Hannah Glen missed only three goals for the game scoring 38. Kereru created more opportunities in front of goal and were deserved winners.
In other Premier 1 games Saints had an easy win over St Nicholas 56-29, while Technical were also untroubled by Kereru B and scored their highest total for the season so far in winning by 22, 69-47.
In Premier 2 competition the game of the round was a high scoring contest between St Andrew's and Kereru C, with St Andrew's winning by a single goal 60-59. After a close first quarter St Andrews dominated the second 19-11 and had an 8 goal lead by three quarter time. While the final quarter was all Halswell who poured on 17 goals to St Andrews 10, they fell agonisingly short by the smallest of margins. Shooter Billie Nuku was the standout in the final quarter for Halswell scoring 16 of the 17 goals for the quarter.
St Margaret's continues to remain unbeaten but found themselves in a close tussle with Halswell this week. While the ladder leaders lead by 8 at half time, a 11-7 third quarter got Halswell back in the contest, but they were unable to make further inroads, losing by just four 55-51. Jenna Lancaster stood out for Halswell missing just two goals from 31 attempts. St Margaret's also won a rescheduled match against St Andrews 59-49 in advance of this coming weekend where players will be unavailable due to the Queen's Birthday Tournament. Ivy Brown was simply outstanding at goal attack shooting 37 from 38 attempts.
In the two other games UC Netball defeated Lincoln by seven 46-39. Lincoln will rue their accuracy in front of goal having had more scoring shots overall, while Technical B sit in second on the table after a 60-41 win over Christchurch Girls High School. They remain equal on wins with St Andrews.
