Team Effort | Health and Sport Central

Health and Sport Central is the only Christchurch Physiotherapy Clinic that has been dedicated to the needs of netball since the 1980’s – supporting athletes and umpires, injury prevention and rehabilitation.

With this history and insights straight from the heart of the Christchurch Netball community, the locally owned clinic has established itself as a South Island leader in the assessment, treatment and prevention of netball injuries.

The wider practice, located on Colombo Street next to South City Mall, includes General Practitioners, Nurses and Podiatrists, with a focus on musculoskeletal health. They have developed into the city’s only netball-focused multidisciplinary clinic.

According to Health and Sport Central’s Clinical Lead, Jeremy McTear, their mission statement is summed up in the mantra:

"A team of professionals dedicated to giving you the freedom to enjoy an active and healthy lifestyle.”

Jeremy’s team is equipped to help make decisions at time of injury, review progress and rehabilitate as well as guide you back to sport following injury. They can also work closely with other Physiotherapy practices, Christchurch Hospital, 24 Hour Surgery, orthopaedic surgeons, Sports and Exercise Physicians as well as a wide range of other Health Care Providers.

“All of our physios are trained and passionate about sports and exercise medicine. It’s the work we love doing – with sports, teams and athletes.”

After nearly 40 years serving Saturday netball every winter at the Hagley Park courts, the team has a strong sense of loyalty and commitment to Christchurch Netball. They are also very proud to support the development of junior netballers and wider netball community in providing a world class standard of care at the new Netball Centre.

Members and clubs all benefit from the expertise that has developed over generations. Representative teams are proudly supported by Physiotherapists who travel and assist our top level athletes at national tournaments. Large events can also have access to this dedicated Sports Physiotherapy and Podiatry team.

The service is not only for athletes and umpires post-injury. Instead, a proactive approach can include muscle screening to assess for muscle imbalance and develop strategies to address and prevent some forms of injury and pain.

Podiatrist Sarah Duncan has served Christchurch Netball Centre for 15 years. In addition to injury assessment and treatment, Sarah assesses and can advise on running technique. She is able to prescribe, construct and issue orthotics with certain injuries. Orthotics can not only help manage and prevent injury / pain, but can also benefit athletic performance.
