Super Club teams representing Christchurch Netball made an impressive start to the Netball Mainland Super Club Competition held in Christchurch this weekend.
Halswell Netball Club was the most impressive, with three wins from three games. Halswell top Pool A with wins over Rolleston (57-48), Richmond (57-48) and Hokitika (58-50). Six foot two Goal shooter Harriet Fenwick was the standout in goal for Halswell, but will unfortunately miss the finals weekend.
Halswell Coach Kirsten Roydhouse, said ‘To almost reach 60 goals in every game after never playing as a team before, is just testament to how good these girls are and what we are capable of achieving this season.’
Kia Toa finished with two wins from three games, with wins over Stoke (51-43) and West Coast (59-24). Lincoln beat Kia Toa (54-46) and top Pool B.
Goal shooter Radha Petero was outstanding and the focal point for Kia Toa in each game, against West Coast shooting 47 goals from 50 attempts at 94 per cent.
Kia Toa Coach Corrina Ruki rotated her mid-court throughout to great effect and Leah Kini and Kala Brown were solid in defence. ‘We are thrilled at securing a top four finish and are looking forward to the challenge against Halswell next weekend,’ she said. ‘If we pick up good ball in defence and show the same patience as we did this weekend, this will put us in good stead for what looks like being an exciting game and a shootout at both ends’.
Finals will be contested next weekend at Saxton Stadium in Nelson. By virtue of their positions, Christchurch teams Halswell and Kia Toa will meet each other in the crossover on Saturday. Each is guaranteed of a top four finish. Lincoln plays Richmond in the other qualifying final.
