Mother and daughter take to court for Belfast Netball Club

On opening day, Joyce Braas and Paige McIraith took to the court for Belfast B (Second Grade A). What was special was that Joyce and Paige (15) are mother and daughter and this was the first time they had played netball together.

We started by asking Joyce how long she had been playing netball and if she had any other roles at the Club.

I started playing netball when I was 6, for Witherley primary School in Blenheim. When I was 12 my family and I moved to Geraldine and I continued to play netball for a club to start then for the high school. Once I left school I moved to Ashburton and played for few different clubs in Ashburton. I joined Belfast netball 3 years ago by chance. My manager's wife played for the club and he mentioned to me her team was looking for another player so I went to a practice.

This year I have also put my hand up to coach a team.

How long has Paige been playing Netball? What school does she go to ... does she play in another team (perhaps midweek).

Paige has been playing netball since futureFERNS in Ashburton, Paige goes to Papanui High school and no she doesn't play netball for another team, she does play basketball for the school and archery on a Wednesday.

How did Paige come to play in your team, and what positions do you both play?

I got a reminder for trails and I asked Paige if she wanted to come along. Then when they called the teams she was in my team, I looked at her and said up to you Paige, but I think you will learn a lot and it will be more of a challenge for you then school netball, but you to you. She trialled for school and then said she would prefer to play for Belfast this year.

The last few seasons Paige has played GA - GS, but she is a natural at defence. I play GK and occasionally GD.

Tell us about your first game together and the season opener … and do you feel you have a connection on court.

Saturday was the first game we played together, Paige was GD and I was GK. It was strange to have Paige on court with me in a competition game, I wasn't sure if I should protect her or let her stand on her own 2 feet. The first few minutes I could see she was nervous, I went up to her and said come on, its ok. And she was away. I stopped worrying about her and we played a good game so I guess, yes, we do have a connection on court. And we won the game!

From CNC, thank you Joyce and Paige for sharing your story with us, and congratulations!
