Christchurch Netball Centre representative teams have participated in their first competitive netball competitions since teams were named last month.
The Netball Mainland Under 15 Tournament took place at EA Networks Stadium in Ashburton from 2-4 June. The Tournament attracts a large number of Under 15 and Under 14 representative teams from around the Mainland Zone.
Christchurch Netball Centre entered three Under 15 and three Under 14 teams in the Tournament. The Under 15 Red team coached by Marama Lynch won the Under 15A Grade Championship defeating Nelson Under 15A 44 to 21. While it was a hard fought first half with the Nelson side capitalising on Christchurch errors, Christchurch lifted in the second half to pull away. The side was undefeated for the Tournament.
Good news also for the Christchurch Under 15 White team who won the B Grade final defeating South Canterbury 29 to 24. South Canterbury had the best of starts, taking the first quarter 6-10, but by half time scores were level. South Canterbury took a two goal lead into the final quarter, but a 10-3 last quarter by the Christchurch team allowed them a five goal margin at the final whistle. Coach Lee McKenzie said her team executed the game plan and believed in themselves.
In other results, in the A Grade section, Under 14 Red finished 5th, Under 15 Black 6th and Under 14 Black 10th. In the B Grade section Under 14 white finished 3rd.The annual Queen’s Birthday Tournaments hosted by Christchurch Netball Centre for Under 19 and Under 17 teams were held at St Margaret’s College and Bishopdale venues respectively. Both of Christchurch’s Under 19 and Under 17A teams were undefeated in the round robin fixtures, while the Under 17 Development team were also competitive.
