Experience at NZSS 2018 | Sam Adams CGHS

Christchurch Girls High School along with Villa Maria College represented the South Island courtesy of third and first place finishes respectively at SISS. We caught up with CGHS Sam Adams, one of the Team Captains and the only Year 13 in the team.

CNC: How did you prepare prior to each game?

SA: Prior to each game we had a team meeting talking about the team we had ahead of us and made individual goals for what we wanted to work on in that game and then we would make a word that would stand for that goal. Talking it up was also a huge thing for our team, therefore high fives, chat and music before, during and after games were essential for us to keep a good team vibe throughout the tournament.

CNC: How did you recover between games?

SA: After each game we would walk it out for a good 10 minutes and then have a huge stretch session whilst rehydrating and eating some food. Between each game we had enough time to go back to where we were staying at Craighead Boarding House where we put our legs up the wall as well as gained a few massages from our coaches. On day 1 we won the Netball Smart Recovery competition.

CNC: What was the hardest contest you faced over the 4 days (and why)?

SA: The level throughout the competition was amazing that it’s hard to pick a particular game. Although one of the hardest contestants we faced over the four days was probably against fellow Christchurch team Villa Maria College because this game was not only just a physical game for us but a mental game also because of the rivalry that has been held with them throughout the season. Coming across Saint Kentigerns College was another big step up us due to their very fast ball speed and physical strength that they held in every area of the court.

CNC: What was the highlight of competing at NZSS?

SA: My highlight of the tournament was playing against some extremely talented players from all across New Zealand and just getting the chance to be able to experience the tournament. It was great to see how my team progressed over the course of the 4 days as they stepped up for each and every game. Winning the Netball smart recovery competition was also a huge highlight for our team!!

CNC: What will you take away from your experience at NZSS?

SA: The work ethic that everyone put in leading up to this tournament was well in truly shown during the week. I will take away the commitment and skill level that was displayed in every game making them deserving of being down in Timaru.

CNC: Is there anything else you would like to share about your time at the Tournament?

SA: NZSS was a great way to finish off my 5 years of CGHS netball. Thank-you to my team, coaches Chloe and Rosie and manager, Mrs Brown for making an awesome last tournament.
