Five minutes with Victor Godsmark-White

Victor Godsmark-White is well known in netball circles as a player and coach. He has been involved in some historic games of netball, including Wednesday night! We caught up with Victor and asked about Wednesday's game amongst other things!

CNC: What was it like? Did it feel any different to a regular Winter season game?

It was great to be involved with the new season.  I think myself and all the players just felt grateful to be able to play mens netball again, at this stage soo many other places around the world don’t have the opportunity to play the sport they love and enjoy.  So super stoked and excited to get the season underway with my Revs whanau.

CNC: Who do you expect to be the top contenders for this season?

The old boys team [Kereru] looks pretty talented, a lot of experience.  But I will never rule out the Revs men’s team, we have a great mix of youth and experience, amazing coach and a great club backing and supporting us. It's anyones title lol.

CNC: How long have you been playing netball?

Oh gosh since 1999 lol, which was around the last few years we were back at CNC, I don’t even think some of my teammates were born then lol.  Play as long as you're enjoying and loving the game.

CNC: Was your first involvement in the game as a player or coach/manager?

Player, followed by coach.

CNC: What makes netball your chosen sport?

From a young age I always loved watching  netball and the team dynamics and the skill involved in beating your opponent.  Players like Teresa Tairi and her craftiness back then pushed my love for the sport even more.

CNC: You were involved in an historic game of netball when the NZ Men's team played the Silver Ferns in the lead up to the World Cup. What was that like?

WOW, just incredible.  Something that I thought would never happen in my playing time.  It has always been an honour to represent NZ for me, however to be representing the players, coaches and NZ execs who came before us was incredible.  All their hard work lead us to that.  Also my family and friends.

And after leaving that series, I could feel that Ferns team had something special and powerful about them.  It was truly a dream come true.

CNC: What advice would you give to any young men out there thinking about playing our great game?

Give it a go.  Its physical and challenging, but you are constantly thinking of ways to outplay your opposition. If you have a goal stick to it no matter any setbacks that arise.  This great sport of netball is no longer just for women, Men's netball has arrived and its only going to get better 😊

CNC: Tell us something we may not know about you?

I've represented Niue in netball and I'm a keen snowboarder.

CNC: Describe yourself in three words.

Passionate, committed and humourous.

Thanks Victor, what a great insight! Much appreciated and good luck for the season.
