The South Island's premier indoor community sport facility remains on track for a Summer 23/24 opening, with the install of sprung wooden flooring ongoing, with work started on the six court area. The line marking will also start to go on this month in the four court area.

With just over two months to go until completion of the building, things are moving quickly at the Christchurch Netball's new all-weather home.

​​​​​​​In the central core area, wall framing, lining and finishes are continuing, with first fix services mostly complete. The building is fully enclosed with all external doors and entryway cladding installed, with internal doors to follow in the next couple of weeks. Outside the building, external works continue, with curbs installed for the new carparks and concourse around the front of the building, and asphalt to begin soon.

Located at Ngā Puna Wai, this venue is:

A year-round, all-weather home for netball in Ōtautahi
Available for sport, recreation and cultural group bookings
Suitable for a wide range of large and small meetings and events
Adaptable, welcoming and inclusive space

Last month marked a signiifcant milestone, when work began on the forecourt side preparing and laying the Hevea Malaysian hardwood that will be the court surface of all 10 courts.

All services work is complete to the courts areas as the final cladding is being installed on the west side of the building and to the entrance, meaning the facility is now fully enclosed.

Work is underway to frame the multiple central core areas including offices, reception and multi-use rooms, while the change room blockwork is complete and first fix services continues in this area.The mezzanine level was recently poured and provides excellent views out to courts on both sides of the facility.

According to Christchurch Netball Centre (CNC) Board Chair Anna Galvan, each milestone reflects the commitment by construction and community partners to open the facility on time.The Christchurch Netball Centre’s new indoor community sport venue at Ngā Puna Wai will bring together a wide range of sporting codes and activities to enjoy this all-weather, fit-for-purpose facility. The project has been made possible by funding from an anonymous benefactor, motivated by the significant challenges for whānau across Ōtautahi Christchurch following the region’s earthquakes. It will become the South Island’s premier indoor community sport and recreation venue.

“As an organisation, the Christchurch Netball Centre is committed to the wellbeing of our communities," says Galvan. "We work closely with sporting and community partners, to find ways for our new space to welcome people of all ages from across Ōtautahi, to enjoy a wide range of sports and activities.”

The Christchurch Netball Centre has 5500 members, including administrators, officials and active volunteers representing all corners of the city.

According to CNC General Manager Tom Houghton: “It's so much more than a netball facility - the courts will create space for community, cultural, sport and recreational groups.”

Houghton acknowledges that Winter 2023 is a critical period for the Christchurch Netball Centre to understand the questions that members have about how netball competition and events will look across two venues, Ngā Puna Wai and Hagley Park.

“This process of listening to our community is critical,” Houghton adds. “Their family life and friendships are built around netball training, competition and events. A time of change is our chance to reflect on how we currently make information available – and how we can do better.”
