New Zealand Community Trust (NZCT) continues to harness the power of sport to lift the mana of participants and volunteers alike, in partnership with Christchurch Netball Centre, new indoor courts and a true team effort.
“Continued support from New Zealand Community Trust, and their local venues, truly changes the game for Christchurch Netball, and our sporting friends who call the Centre home,” says Christchurch Netball Centre Board Chair Warren Poh.
“Our team is committed to grow a love of the game across Christchurch and beyond. We are motivated by the way that netball, and so many sporting codes, promote connection and wellbeing. We see the benefits not only in individuals, but whānau and communities.”
Through NZCT funding this winter, CNC can continue to deliver and enhance programmes that increase participation to people of all ages, abilities and disabilities. These programmes are designed for diverse groups, from rangatahi with no sporting experience, to participants with physical and intellectual disabilities, preschool tamariki and women returning to sport after starting a family.
“The grant is focused on addressing barriers that exist to individuals and communities who benefit from netball participation in terms of physical and mental health. Due to this unparalleled support, the impact of netball as a source of connection and hauora can only grow.”
“Thanks to NZCT, community sport in Christchurch has a highly accessible, inclusive space that lifts the mana of thousands of participants and volunteers every week,” Poh adds. An NZCT grant in 2023 contributed a critical amount ($1.05m) to complete the Centre’s construction at the start of summer.
Futsal, volleyball, korfball and rhythmic gymnastics now call the facility home. Events and regular activation by Canterbury Handball and ultimate frisbee, along with national netball tournaments and the Commonwealth Junior and Cadet Fencing Championship, have been highlights in the inaugural year.
“As Christchurch Netball, we consider it a privilege to share this space with the wider community, cultural, sport and recreation groups. Seeing the response of the netball community, and growth across both junior and senior grades, has certainly been a highlight as well.”
The sporting community can acknowledge the continued support of NZCT by supporting NZCT venues across Christchurch and Canterbury.
