Where to start!

This information is designed to help you if:

  • You are leaving school and want to keep playing netball.
  • You are shifting to Christchurch and want to find a club.
  • You are returning to netball after a break.

Grades are available in Winter for serious competition with excellent club players as well as grades for more social players. Summer Netball is available offering competitive and social grades.

The Premier 1 grade competition players (Winter) contribute to the ANZ premiership, National Netball League and age group teams. It is a high standard of competition which is played indoors on weeknights.

The top School/College teams play in Premier 2 which is also held indoors, currently on a Saturday.

The Senior grades, particularly Senior 1 and 2 and Challenge 1 and 2 are very competitive with a mix of school based and club teams.

Remember, Club trials start early! These can be held as early as the last week in February. It pays to make enquiries then or look out for club trial dates in late January/early February. [The link to club trials will reopen at the start of each year.]

If you are leaving School:

And you want to play in a good standard of competition in Christchurch you need to look for a club that has teams in Premier, Senior and Challenge levels. It is good to trial at a club which has a range of teams so that you get a feel for where you belong.

Contact the club and don't be afraid to ask questions about coaches, club activities or any of the things that are important to you.

It is important to find a club where you will feel comfortable and where you can play at the level that will help you develop your play.

And you want to play for fun and exercise you should look for a club which offers more social teams in senior grades. Always remember that when you are joining a club you are making a commitment to be part of a team for the whole season.

Contact the club and don't be afraid to ask questions about teams and club activities or any of the things that are important to you. The club may require you attend trials. Don't be put off as it is a good way to get a feel for how the club operates and to work out if it is what you are looking for. If you want to play a more social grade make it clear from the start so that the club can place you in the right team. It is important to find a club where you will feel comfortable and where you can play at the level which you will enjoy participating.

And you want to play with a group of friends you could approach a club and ask to enter a team under their umbrella. You will likely be required to pay their fees and will be subject to any rules they have.
